Homalomena rubescens 'Black Emerald' – low-light beauty with dark, velvety leaves

Homalomena rubescens 'Black Emerald', also known as 'Dark', is a compact tropical plant with thick, heart-shaped leaves that shift from deep green to almost black depending on light and maturity. The surface has a subtle shimmer under indirect light, giving it a polished, velvety finish. Each leaf rises on a red-toned petiole, creating contrast and structure. This plant holds its form in low light, prefers stable humidity, and stays dense and symmetrical without outgrowing its space. It's one of the more understated but quietly striking self-heading species in indoor collections.

Leaf traits and plant form

  • Leaf shape: Broadly cordate with soft texture and pointed tip
  • Color: Deep green to blackish tones; sometimes with red undertones in petiole
  • Texture: Semi-gloss to matte with velvety finish under certain lighting
  • Growth habit: Upright and bushy, with moderate spacing between leaves
  • Indoor size: Reaches 25 – 40 cm in height and slightly wider in spread

Native context and cultivation background

This cultivar is derived from Homalomena rubescens, a species native to Southeast Asian rainforests. It naturally grows under dense canopy, where humidity is high and light is diffuse. 'Black Emerald' has been selected for its compact size, strong leaf color, and clean indoor growth. It tolerates medium light, prefers evenly moist soil, and responds well to steady conditions without drafts or sudden changes.

  • Origin: Cultivar of Southeast Asian tropical forest species
  • Growth speed: Slow to moderate
  • Climate tolerance: Prefers warm, humid air; avoid dry or cold spaces
  • Toxicity: Assumed toxic to pets and humans if ingested
  • Lifecycle: Evergreen with year-round presence indoors

Homalomena 'Black Emerald' care guide

  • Light: Medium to bright indirect light; avoid direct sun on foliage
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist; let top layer dry slightly between waterings
  • Humidity: Prefers 60 – 70% or higher; grows best with consistent ambient humidity
  • Temperature: 20 – 28 °C ideal; avoid exposure below 15 °C
  • Soil: Rich, chunky tropical mix with bark, compost, and perlite
  • Repotting: Every 2 – 3 years or when roots fill the pot base
  • Feeding: Fertilize every 4 – 6 weeks with balanced, diluted liquid feed
  • Propagation: Division during repotting is most reliable
  • Hydroponics: Not ideal – prefers semi-moist, organic soil
  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or outer leaves as needed

Common issues and what to do

  • Yellow leaves: Usually due to inconsistent watering or cold exposure
  • Leaf curl or softness: Can signal underwatering or dry air – adjust both
  • Pest issues: May attract spider mites or mealybugs; wipe leaves regularly and treat early
  • Fungal spots: Improve airflow and avoid water sitting on leaf surface
  • Slow growth: Normal in lower light or during colder months – adjust placement

Extra notes and display tips

'Black Emerald' fits cleanly into modern interiors – the compact, symmetrical growth and rich tone make it a quiet anchor in a group of brighter plants. It thrives in bathrooms, warm kitchens, or grouped with other moisture-loving foliage where humidity stays stable. It doesn’t sprawl or climb and can hold its shape for years with little maintenance.

Etymology and cultivar origin

“Homalomena” comes from Greek roots meaning “even” and “moon,” referring to the smooth leaf symmetry. The species name “rubescens” points to its reddish petioles. The cultivar name 'Black Emerald' highlights the deep green-black tone and gem-like appearance of its leaves.

Jon Morgan's stepson? Say. Less!
Format: Kindle
This is book one in the Blade Kings series and we are starting off with a bang because we have Jon Morgan's stepson as our MMC! This was my first second generation story and I. Loved. it! I am a huge Jon Morgan fan so seeing Jack take the Morgan name and number made me emotional. 🥹 Jack is the textbook definition of a boy obsessed. He has been down hard for Kendra since they first met in college. Unfortunately she was dating his team rival, Tyler. Tyler took Kendra for granted and didn't give her the time and attention she deserved. And Jack hated him for it. Fast forward a few years and they are all in New York City, where Jack and Tyler are playing on the same team again, and Kendra is a pro soccer player. And there is still nothing but bad blood between Jack and Tyler. Eventually Kendra realizes that Tyler doesn't value their relationship like he should so she ends things. Which gives Jack the time to work that Morgan (yes I know he's not really a Morgan but he acts like one). 😏 When Kendra needs a place to stay Jack is more than happy to offer up his place. And when Tyler won't leave her alone they decide to enter into a fake relationship to keep him away. Which causes some 💥 on and off the ice between the guys As you can imagine it doesn't take long for Kendra to realize how incredible Jack is and how much she was missing out on. My girl Kendra is a total badass independent queen. She is fierce and dedicated, but also vulnerable and passionate. They give us some top notch banter and chemistry that is off the charts. Jack is so patient and sweet and swoony and treats her how she deserves to be treated. The way he cares for and loves her had me in a puddle. Ruth absolutely slayed this book like she does all of her others. At this point if she writes it I'm going to read it and I'm going to love it! If you haven't already you need to add it to your TBR you will not be disappointed. ✨ Available on Kindle Unlimited today!

A British Boyfriend NHL Player
Format: Kindle
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️🌶️🌶️ You know, I read this on a whim when I saw that our hero Jack would be British, playing pro in the NHL. As it turns out, why did I suddenly forget he was British while reading this, and it was only when he reminded us that I went, oh yeah he is. As for Kendra, I just felt unsatisfied with her, I love Jack and I saw how much he loved her, but I felt Kendra didn’t give him the same love that he projected for her. The chemistry felt really one-sided on Jack’s part and I felt that, despite all the spice, he gave more than he took. How can this girl really say she was upset over bro group chats from college when they barely spoke at all, yet she remained faithful to her obviously cheating ex-boyfriend who was seen with other girls during their four years together? Girlie forgot her pride and she also has a lot of anxiety to work through. We also never get to see or hear her play, unlike Jack, and we barely catch a glimpse of it during her practices, so how can you convince me she was the best or that she deserved all these promotions? I wasn’t convinced about her talent at all, and I’ve read many sports romances where the female heroines absolutely dominate in their sport. All in all, what I am convinced of is that most of the people rating this five stars did it for Jack, the multiple spice scenes, and the abundance of romance tropes: mature hockey romance, friends to lovers, forced proximity, fake dating, he falls first and harder, hockey player x soccer player, third act conflict/breakup, misunderstanding/ miscommunication, the aggressive ex boyfriend, and unrequited love. After reading this, I’m not inclined to read the series before this one. I’ll try again in the next book, it seems to be more interesting with Sawyer and Collins.

Hockey / football (soccer) romance
Format: Kindle
I love a good sports romance. This was a sweet but hot sports romance, what I liked was both the main characters were both sports players. This is a quick read and I liked the author's writing style, I will definitely read more from her.

Definitely worth it
I initially wondered if this would be worth the money. But, I have a puppy who eats everything - including kindles. She ate the first one and I said to myself, I'll buy another and just be careful to put it out of her reach. Then she ate the second one! So, I bought a second one and added the insurance. She ate this one and, with the insurance, it was replaced with a new one. We call the 'puppy' (who is now a little over a year old) 'Jaws'. Hopefully, this third kindle won't go in her mouth. But, getting smarter, I bought a cover for it so that, if she puts her teeth on it, she'll just damage the cover.

Thankful I purchased it!
I’ve purchased several square trade warranties over the years and they have always been amazing when I’ve needed to use it. This past week I attempted to charge my Kindle after not using it for several months. When I opened it the next morning the screen just showed a battery symbol with an ! inside it. After researching and attempting to trouble shoot, I realized it was toast. Called Amazon and no issues getting the replacement scheduled. My ONLY issue is the warranty has a guaranteed 2 day replacement and mine is supposed to take almost a week. Anyhow, I highly recommend buying the warranty.
